It is said that the best way to keep bones healthy is to eat products high in calcium, and that milk and dairy products are best suited for this purpose. However, is this the full truth of the matter? In this article, we talk about calcium from a different perspective. Instead of emphasizing milk, we present another food that has fantastic benefits for bone health: prunes. Read more to help prevent bone loss with  prunes !

The truth about calcium

When talking about bone problems such as osteoporosis, the benefits of calcium for bone health often come to the fore. While this mineral is important for human health, there are other equally important minerals that help the body absorb the calcium it receives.

First, instead of maximizing calcium, you should focus on how balanced your diet is and whether you get both calcium and other nutrients your body needs. Prunes are one such recommended product, and in the following we will explain in more detail their health-promoting properties.

Acidification

The body can have an acidic or alkaline pH and most people are prone to acidity due to, among other things, poor eating habits (for example, fried foods and products containing industrially processed sugars are not recommended). It is also caused by other harmful lifestyle factors such as alcohol, smoking, negative emotions, stress or pollution.

So what does this acidification mean? Excessive acidity causes  reaction in the body where the body begins to steal calcium from the bones  and removes it through the urine to keep your pH as balanced as possible.

This phenomenon has the first benefit of prunes: plums are a great pH balancer for the body, as they have an alkalizing effect.

Other nutrients from prunes

In addition, prunes are high in potassium, magnesium, boron, copper and iron, and contain vitamins A and K.  These are essential for bone health and prevent bone loss. According to several studies, eating them daily can reduce the risk of suffering from skeletal related diseases.

Dried or fresh plums are nutritious and they effectively prevent constipation, which is why they should be good to eat, particularly in the mornings.

How should prunes be eaten?

The healthiest way to eat prunes is to leave them soaked overnight in a cup of water. Then eat them on an empty stomach in the morning, and also drink water. Ideally, you should eat 3-5 prunes daily.

However, if prunes don’t sound like a very appealing idea to you, you can combine them with fresh fruits or vegetables. You can also put them on breads or cakes, and the sweet juiciness of plums can replace sugar in your favorite recipes.
