The link between red meat and the onset of cancer

Today, as many as 75-80% of cancers are caused by external factors that damage the functioning of our bodies. Among others, the Spanish cancer research organization AECC (Asociación Española Contra el Cáncer) has confirmed that our diet plays a very large part in the possible pathogenesis of cancer. In this article, we take a closer look at the official opinion of the World Health Organization, which focuses on global health, about the link between red meat and the development of cancer.

One exact reason why some people are more exposed to carcinogens than others is not yet known today. However, several scientific studies have shown over the years that genes, along with factors that affect our lifestyles and habitats, can expose health-damaging cellular changes around the body.

Red meat and processed meat

The World Health Organization (WHO) sorts red meat into all meat tissue produced by, among others, the following mammals:

  • Cow
  • Taurus
  • Calf
  • Swine
  • Sheep
  • Goat
  • Horse

For processed meat, the WHO sorts variations and variations of the above meat products, such as:

  • Corned meat
  • Dry meat
  • Canned meat
  • Smoked meat

Most processed meat is made from either beef or pork. A lot of processed meat is also made from chicken and meat-like products such as blood, leather and rind. Such products include:

  • Sausages
  • Ham
  • Canned meat
